To Local Coalitions:
Please distribute this information to those involved in your local breastfeeding coalition.
The Fourth National Conference of State/Territorial/Tribal Breastfeeding Coalitions will be held in Arlington, VA August 4-6, 2012.
Every other year (in even numbered years), United States Breastfeeding Coalition (USBC) brings together breastfeeding coalition leaders from every U.S. state and territory, including representatives from relevant government departments, non-governmental organizations including consumer (parents) groups, and health professional associations. This singular gathering—the National Conference of State/Territorial/Tribal Breastfeeding Coalitions (NCSBC)—assists with development of the leadership capacity to more effectively build and manage coalitions to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding at the state and territory level.
The goals and objectives of the conference include dissemination of information on current evidence-based best practices, strategy planning, and coalition building and strengthening. These are essential steps in enhancing the ability of coalitions to successfully increase the incidence, duration, and exclusivity of breastfeeding and thus help to achieve the Healthy People national breastfeeding goals.
As in the past, the Minnesota Breastfeeding Coalition will be asked to select two individuals who will have their travel and lodging expenses subsidized as a Sponsored Attendee. This funding has been confirmed for 2012 with a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We hope and anticipate that Sponsored Attendee funding will also continue for the state/territory and Indian Nation WIC Breastfeeding Coordinators. This funding is currently pending.
In selecting its two Sponsored Attendees, the Minnesota Breastfeeding Coalition, will give preference to those who have never attended a NCSBC conference. One representative will be from the current Minnesota Breastfeeding Coalition steering committee, and the second will be an individual from a local coalition who agrees to commit to a minimum of two years on the Minnesota Breastfeeding Coalition steering committee.
